Antoniazzo Romano
Antoniazzo Romano (c. 1430–1508) was one of the most important painters of the Early Roman Renaissance, renowned for blending the brilliance of Byzantine tradition with the emerging naturalism of the Renaissance. Active in Rome during the second half of the 15th century, Antoniazzo became the leading figure of the Roman school before the arrival of masters like Raphael and Michelangelo.
His works include frescoes and altarpieces across Rome and Lazio, such as the Annunciation at Santa Maria sopra Minerva and panels in the Basilica of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme. Antoniazzo was also entrusted with restoring revered icons, showing his mastery in preserving Rome’s sacred artistic heritage while introducing Renaissance depth, perspective, and human warmth into religious imagery.
