Cristovao de Figueiredo
Cristóvão de Figueiredo (active c. 1515–1540) was a distinguished painter of the Portuguese Renaissance, celebrated for his religious altarpieces and devotional panels. A royal painter to King John III of Portugal, Figueiredo belonged to the circle of leading Portuguese artists who blended the precision of the Northern Renaissance with the luminous style of Iberian painting.
His most notable works include contributions to the Santa Cruz Monastery Altarpiece in Coimbra, admired for its monumental scale and spiritual intensity, and other religious commissions that brought grandeur to Portuguese churches. His paintings are marked by strong composition, refined color, and balanced realism, reflecting the transition from Gothic traditions to full Renaissance naturalism in Portugal.
