Daniele da Volterra
Daniele da Volterra (1509–1566), born Daniele Ricciarelli, was an Italian painter and sculptor of the Late Renaissanceand a close associate of Michelangelo. Best remembered for his powerful frescoes and expressive religious scenes, Daniele blended Michelangelo’s monumental style with his own Mannerist sensibility, creating works of striking emotional intensity.
His most famous painting, the Descent from the Cross (Trinità dei Monti, Rome), is considered one of the greatest religious works of the 16th century. Daniele also became known as the “Il Braghettone” after being commissioned to paint draperies over the nudes in Michelangelo’s Last Judgment in the Sistine Chapel. Beyond painting, he was also an accomplished sculptor, contributing bronze works influenced by Michelangelo’s designs.
