Jacques Daret
Jacques Daret (c. 1404–c. 1470) was a Flemish painter of the Early Netherlandish Renaissance, closely connected to the workshop of Robert Campin (the Master of Flémalle). A member of the Tournai painters’ guild, Daret helped spread the naturalism and technical innovations of the Campin school across northern Europe.
His most celebrated works are the panels of the Arras Altarpiece (1433–1435), now dispersed in Berlin, Madrid, and Brussels, which include the Visitation, Nativity, and Presentation in the Temple. These paintings are admired for their detailed realism, luminous color, and expressive figures, reflecting the early mastery of oil techniques that defined Flemish Renaissance art.
