Maerten van Heemskerck
Maerten van Heemskerck (1498–1574) was a prominent painter of the Northern Renaissance, known for his dynamic compositions, expressive figures, and richly detailed altarpieces. A native of the Netherlands, Heemskerck traveled to Rome, where he studied classical antiquity and absorbed the influence of Michelangelo and the Italian High Renaissance. He later fused these influences with the precision and detail of Northern European art, developing a bold and distinctive style.
His most celebrated works include the Altarpiece of St. Lawrence (Haarlem), the Self-Portrait with the Colosseum, and numerous mythological and biblical scenes that reveal his fascination with both human anatomy and classical ruins. Heemskerck also became famous for his series of engravings depicting the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, which helped shape the European imagination of antiquity.
