Andrea del Verrocchio
Andrea del Verrocchio (c. 1435–1488) was one of the most influential artists of the Italian Renaissance, renowned as both a painter and sculptor, and celebrated above all as the teacher of Leonardo da Vinci. Active in Florence, Verrocchio’s studio became a training ground for some of the greatest masters of the Renaissance, including Perugino, Ghirlandaio, and Lorenzo di Credi.
Verrocchio’s paintings, such as The Baptism of Christ (with contributions by Leonardo da Vinci), reveal his mastery of form, perspective, and delicate naturalism. As a sculptor, his works like the Equestrian Statue of Bartolomeo Colleoniin Venice and the Christ and St. Thomas bronze group in Orsanmichele, Florence, are landmarks of Renaissance art. His ability to merge classical ideals with lifelike realism ensured his lasting influence on the next generation of artists.
