Andrea Palladio
Andrea Palladio (1508–1580) was the most influential architect of the Italian Renaissance, whose classical designs shaped Western architecture for centuries. Based in Vicenza and Venice, Palladio studied ancient Roman ruins and translated their harmony, proportion, and clarity into villas, palaces, and churches that became models of elegance and balance. His architectural treatise, I Quattro Libri dell’Architettura (The Four Books of Architecture), published in 1570, spread his ideas across Europe and later inspired the rise of Palladian architecture in England, America, and beyond.
His most famous works include the Villa Rotonda, the Basilica Palladiana in Vicenza, and the churches of San Giorgio Maggiore and Il Redentore in Venice. Palladio’s style emphasized classical harmony, symmetry, and proportion, setting the standard for Renaissance and neoclassical architecture alike.
