Dirk Bouts
Dirk Bouts (c. 1410–1475) was a master of the Early Netherlandish Renaissance, active mainly in Leuven. Known for his serene figures, precise detail, and innovative use of perspective, Bouts helped shape the development of Northern Renaissance painting in the 15th century.
His most celebrated works include the Last Supper (St. Peter’s Church, Leuven), one of the earliest Netherlandish paintings to apply linear perspective, as well as the Justice of Emperor Otto III panels and numerous devotional images of the Virgin and saints. Bouts’s quiet, meditative style, with its emphasis on clarity and solemn expression, set him apart from his contemporaries like Jan van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden.
