Domenico Ghirlandaio
Domenico Ghirlandaio (1449–1494) was one of the leading masters of the Florentine Renaissance, renowned for his vivid frescoes, detailed portraits, and narrative skill. A highly sought-after painter, he combined Renaissance naturalism with decorative elegance, capturing both sacred stories and the likeness of Florence’s prominent citizens.
Among his greatest achievements are the fresco cycles in the Tornabuoni Chapel of Santa Maria Novella and the Sassetti Chapel in Santa Trinita, which portray biblical events with remarkable realism and attention to contemporary Florentine life. Ghirlandaio was also a gifted portraitist, and his workshop became one of the most important in Florence—training future masters including Michelangelo.
