Gentile Bellini
Gentile Bellini (c. 1429–1507) was a leading painter of the Venetian Renaissance, celebrated for his portraits, religious altarpieces, and detailed depictions of Venetian life. The eldest son of Jacopo Bellini and brother of Giovanni Bellini, Gentile played a central role in shaping Venice’s artistic identity during the 15th century.
Appointed official painter to the Venetian Republic, Gentile produced works that combined the elegance of Gothic traditions with Renaissance naturalism. His most famous works include Procession in St. Mark’s Square and St. Mark Preaching in Alexandria, where his attention to architectural detail and large-scale storytelling are especially evident. Gentile was also sent to Constantinople as a cultural ambassador, where he painted portraits of Sultan Mehmed II—an extraordinary exchange between East and West.
