Giulio Clovio
Giulio Clovio (1498–1578), born Juraj Julije Klović, was a Croatian-born artist celebrated as the greatest illuminator of the Italian Renaissance. Often called the “Michelangelo of miniature painting,” Clovio was admired for his exquisite manuscript illuminations, combining Renaissance naturalism with jewel-like detail and vibrant color.
His most famous work is the Farnese Hours, a richly decorated book of hours commissioned by Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, regarded as one of the finest illuminated manuscripts in history. Clovio also created miniature portraits, devotional images, and designs that blended classical themes with Renaissance elegance, influencing artists such as El Greco, whom he mentored in Rome.
At Blue Surf Art, we honor Clovio’s artistry with museum-quality, hand-painted oil on canvas reproductions inspired by his miniatures and designs.
