Jacopo Pontormo
Jacopo Pontormo (1494–1557), born Jacopo Carucci, was a revolutionary painter of the Florentine Renaissance and one of the defining masters of Mannerism. A pupil of Andrea del Sarto, and a contemporary of Rosso Fiorentino, Pontormo broke away from the calm balance of the High Renaissance, creating works that are expressive, emotionally charged, and stylistically daring.
His most celebrated masterpiece is the Deposition from the Cross (Santa Felicita, Florence), renowned for its swirling movement, elongated figures, and otherworldly color palette. Other important works include the Visitation (Carmignano) and numerous portraits that reveal his psychological depth and experimental use of form. Pontormo’s innovative vision influenced later Mannerist artists and set the stage for the transition toward Baroque drama.
