Jan Joest
Jan Joest (c. 1450–1519), also known as Jan Joest of Kalkar or Wesel, was an important painter of the Northern Renaissance, active in the Lower Rhine region. He is best known for his monumental religious works, particularly large-scale altarpieces filled with vivid storytelling and finely detailed figures.
His most celebrated masterpiece is the Altarpiece of the Church of St. Nicolai in Kalkar (1505–1508), which includes over sixty scenes from the life of Christ, admired for their clarity, expressive character, and luminous color. Jan Joest’s art combined the influence of Flemish masters like Rogier van der Weyden with German precision, bridging traditions across the Low Countries and the Rhineland.
