Otto van Veen
Otto van Veen (c. 1556–1629), also known as Octavius Vaenius, was a Flemish painter, humanist, and teacher of Peter Paul Rubens. Active in Antwerp, Brussels, and later as a court painter in Munich and The Hague, van Veen was a key figure in the Northern Renaissance and Mannerism, blending Italian influences with Flemish tradition.
His most celebrated works include religious altarpieces, allegorical paintings, and portraits of European nobility. Van Veen is also remembered for his illustrated emblem books, such as Amorum Emblemata, which combined humanist thought with visual art and were widely influential across Europe. His balanced compositions, intellectual symbolism, and refined execution established him as one of the leading artists of his generation.
