Sofonisba Anguissola
Sofonisba Anguissola (c. 1532–1625) was a pioneering female painter of the Italian Renaissance, admired for her refined portraits and groundbreaking role as a woman artist in a male-dominated era. Born into a noble Cremonese family, she received humanist education and artistic training, which allowed her to rise to international fame — an extraordinary achievement for her time.
Her most famous works include The Chess Game (1555, Poznań), a charming depiction of her sisters, and numerous elegant portraits of Spanish royalty and nobility, created during her tenure as court painter to Philip II of Spain. Her portraits are celebrated for their psychological depth, naturalism, and ability to capture the individuality of her sitters. Sofonisba’s career inspired later generations of women artists, including Artemisia Gentileschi.
