Tintoretto
Tintoretto (1518–1594), born Jacopo Robusti, was one of the greatest masters of the Venetian Renaissance and a defining figure of late Renaissance Mannerism. Nicknamed Il Furioso for his energetic style, Tintoretto combined the luminous color of Titian with Michelangelo’s sculptural drawing, creating works of unmatched drama, movement, and spiritual intensity.
His most famous works include The Miracle of the Slave (Accademia, Venice), The Last Supper (San Giorgio Maggiore, Venice), and his monumental cycle of paintings in the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, one of the largest decorative projects of the Renaissance. With his bold use of perspective, dramatic lighting, and vast canvases, Tintoretto pushed Venetian painting toward the grandeur that anticipated the Baroque.
