Tobias Verhaecht
Tobias Verhaecht (1561–1631) was a Flemish painter of the Late Renaissance, best known for his sweeping, imaginative landscapes. A member of the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke, Verhaecht became the first teacher of Peter Paul Rubens, helping to shape the early career of one of the greatest Baroque masters.
His works are characterized by panoramic mountain views, detailed natural elements, and dramatic skies, often infused with biblical or mythological narratives. Notable examples include Mountain Landscape with Rainbow and Landscape with Tobias and the Angel. Verhaecht’s paintings embody the Northern Renaissance tradition of landscape art while also anticipating the grandeur of Baroque compositions.
