Ambrogio Lorenzetti
Ambrogio Lorenzetti (c. 1290–1348) was one of the greatest painters of the Siena School, renowned for his innovations in perspective, symbolism, and the depiction of civic life. Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused solely on religious art, Ambrogio introduced secular themes, exploring ideas of justice, governance, and morality. His most celebrated work, the Allegory of Good and Bad Government (1338–1339), remains one of the most important fresco cycles of the Middle Ages, combining artistry with powerful political and philosophical messages.
Ambrogio’s style bridged the gap between Byzantine traditions and the emerging Proto-Renaissance, marked by naturalism, expressive figures, and carefully constructed architectural spaces. His contribution expanded the visual language of Italian art, influencing both Sienese and Florentine painters who came after him.
