Bartholomeus Spranger
Bartholomeus Spranger (1546–1611) was a Flemish-born painter and one of the leading masters of Northern Mannerism. After training in Antwerp and traveling through Italy, Spranger absorbed the influence of Michelangelo, Correggio, and Parmigianino before becoming court painter to Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II in Prague.
His most famous works include Hercules, Deianira and Nessus, Venus and Mercury Lamenting the Death of Adonis, and Minerva Victorious over Ignorance. Spranger’s paintings are celebrated for their elongated figures, sensual compositions, and refined elegance, blending Italian Mannerism with Northern European detail. His art, full of allegory and myth, embodied the intellectual sophistication of Rudolfine court culture.
