Cennino Cennini
Cennino Cennini (c. 1360–c. 1427) was an Italian painter of the late Gothic and early Renaissance, best known today as the author of Il Libro dell’Arte (The Book of the Art), a celebrated manual on painting techniques. Trained in the Florentine workshop of Agnolo Gaddi, Cennini’s style combined the decorative brilliance of Gothic art with the emerging realism of the Proto-Renaissance.
While relatively few of his works survive, his importance lies not only in his paintings but also in his role as a teacher and transmitter of artistic knowledge. His treatise offers invaluable insight into the techniques of tempera, fresco, gilding, and drawing, shaping how future generations of artists—including Renaissance masters—approached their craft.
