Defendente Ferrari
Defendente Ferrari (c. 1480–1540/1544) was an accomplished painter of the Northern Italian Renaissance, active mainly in Piedmont. A pupil of Giovanni Martino Spanzotti, Ferrari developed a style that combined late Gothic elegance with Renaissance naturalism, creating works full of vibrant color, ornate detail, and devotional intensity.
His most admired works include the Polyptych of the Annunciation (Turin) and numerous altarpieces depicting the Madonna, saints, and biblical narratives. Ferrari’s paintings are characterized by delicate expressions, rich decorative elements, and a strong sense of storytelling, making him one of the most significant painters of the Piedmontese Renaissance.
