Francesco Melzi
Francesco Melzi (1491–1570) was a distinguished painter of the Italian Renaissance and the most devoted pupil and heir of Leonardo da Vinci. Born into a noble Milanese family, Melzi accompanied Leonardo in his later years, including his time in France, and inherited his master’s manuscripts, drawings, and artistic legacy.
Melzi’s surviving works, though few, reveal his deep assimilation of Leonardo’s techniques — the use of sfumato, harmonious composition, and refined naturalism. His most recognized painting, the Flora (Gemäldegalerie, Berlin), embodies Leonardo’s influence while showing Melzi’s own graceful and poetic touch. Beyond painting, Melzi played a crucial role in preserving and transmitting Leonardo’s notebooks and ideas to future generations.
