Giovanni Cimabue
Giovanni Cimabue (c. 1240–1302), often referred to simply as Cimabue, is considered one of the founding figures of Italian painting and a true pioneer of the Proto-Renaissance. Working in Florence during the late 13th century, Cimabue bridged the gap between the rigid Byzantine tradition and the emerging naturalism that would later be perfected by his pupil Giotto di Bondone.
His most iconic works, such as the Santa Trinita Maestà and mosaics in the Pisa Cathedral, reveal a bold attempt to create lifelike expressions, volume, and a new sense of emotional depth. Cimabue’s influence marked the turning point from medieval iconography to the Renaissance’s human-centered vision, making him a cornerstone in Western art history.
