Hans von Aachen
Hans von Aachen (1552–1615) was a German painter of the Late Renaissance and one of the leading masters of Northern Mannerism. After training in Cologne and traveling extensively in Italy, he absorbed Venetian colorism and Florentine design, which he blended with Northern European precision. Returning to Germany, he became court painter to Emperor Rudolf II in Prague, where he produced works full of elegance, allegory, and intellectual sophistication.
His most celebrated paintings include The Triumph of Truth, Bacchus, Ceres, and Cupid, and Allegory of Peace, Art, and Abundance. Known for his refined portraits, mythological allegories, and religious scenes, Hans von Aachen’s art reflects the cosmopolitan spirit of Rudolfine Prague, where science, art, and mysticism flourished.
