Jerg Ratgeb
Jerg Ratgeb (c. 1480–1526) was a German painter of the Renaissance, known for his monumental altarpieces and expressive style that combined late Gothic traditions with Renaissance innovations. Active in Stuttgart and Frankfurt, Ratgeb’s art is admired for its vivid color, emotional intensity, and detailed narrative scenes.
His most famous work is the Frankfurt Altarpiece (c. 1509–1511), now housed in the Städel Museum, which displays a powerful blend of sacred storytelling and meticulous Northern detail. He also created the Herrenberger Altar, a large-scale masterpiece filled with dynamic figures and dramatic composition. Ratgeb’s life ended tragically, as he was executed for participating in the German Peasants’ War, leaving behind a rare but significant body of work.
