Lo Scheggia
Lo Scheggia (c. 1406–1486), born Giovanni di Ser Giovanni Guidi, was an Italian painter of the Early Renaissance in Florence. He was the younger brother of the great Masaccio, and while Masaccio revolutionized perspective and realism, Lo Scheggia became renowned for his elegant panel paintings, decorative cassoni (marriage chests), and festive imagery. His works embody the spirit of Renaissance Florence, blending narrative charm with refined craftsmanship.
Among his most admired works are the Cassone panels with Scenes from the Story of Esther, and the celebrated Birth Tray (Desco da parto) of Lorenzo de’ Medici, created to commemorate the future statesman’s birth. Lo Scheggia’s paintings reflect the joyous, decorative, and civic culture of 15th-century Florence, making him an essential figure in understanding Renaissance domestic and courtly art.
