Palma il Giovane
Palma il Giovane (1548–1628), born Jacopo Negretti, was a prominent painter of the Late Venetian Renaissance and early Mannerism. The great-nephew of Palma Vecchio, he carried forward the Venetian tradition after the deaths of Titian, Tintoretto, and Veronese, becoming one of the most prolific artists in Venice during the late 16th and early 17th centuries.
His most famous works include vast canvases for the Doge’s Palace in Venice, altarpieces such as the Last Supper (San Giorgio Maggiore), and numerous mythological and allegorical paintings. Palma il Giovane combined the dramatic energy of Tintoretto with the rich color of Titian, developing a versatile style that bridged Renaissance ideals and the Baroque.
