Pieter Aertsen
Pieter Aertsen (1508–1575) was a Flemish painter of the Northern Renaissance, renowned as a pioneer of genre painting and still life. Active in Antwerp and Amsterdam, Aertsen introduced monumental kitchen, market, and peasant scenes that often included subtle religious or moral references in the background.
His most famous works include The Butcher’s Stall (1551, Uppsala), Market Scene with Christ and the Adulteress, and Kitchen Scene with Christ at Emmaus. These paintings are admired for their vivid detail, striking naturalism, and symbolic depth, blending everyday life with sacred themes. Known as the “inverter of still life,” Aertsen’s influence extended to later Dutch Golden Age painters like Rembrandt and Vermeer.
