Sebastiano del Piombo
Sebastiano del Piombo (c. 1485–1547), born Sebastiano Luciani, was a Venetian-born painter who became one of the most important figures of the High Renaissance. Initially trained in Venice under Giovanni Bellini and influenced by Giorgione, Sebastiano absorbed the Venetian tradition of rich color and atmospheric light. After moving to Rome, he worked closely with Michelangelo, blending Venetian color with Florentine design and monumentality.
His most famous works include the Raising of Lazarus (National Gallery, London), the Pietà of Viterbo, and his portraits of Roman nobility and church officials. Sebastiano’s art is admired for its depth of emotion, luminous color, and dramatic intensity. In 1531, he was appointed Keeper of the Papal Seals, earning the nickname del Piombo (of the lead seal).
