Hugo van der Goes
Hugo van der Goes (c. 1440–1482) was one of the greatest painters of the Early Netherlandish Renaissance, celebrated for his monumental altarpieces, expressive figures, and innovative use of color and light. Active in Ghent, van der Goes combined meticulous detail with emotional intensity, influencing both Flemish and Italian Renaissance art.
His most famous masterpiece is the Portinari Altarpiece (Uffizi Gallery, Florence), commissioned for a Florentine church and admired for its naturalistic shepherds, luminous symbolism, and powerful narrative presence. Other notable works include the Adoration of the Shepherds and the Monforte Altarpiece. Van der Goes’s ability to blend devotional solemnity with human realism made him one of the most influential Northern Renaissance masters.
