Konrad Witz
Konrad Witz (c. 1400–1446) was a pioneering painter of the Northern Renaissance, active mainly in Basel, Switzerland. Renowned for his groundbreaking use of naturalistic landscapes, Witz was among the first European artists to depict detailed, true-to-life outdoor settings in religious art.
His most famous work, the Miraculous Draft of Fishes (1444, Musée d’Art et d’Histoire, Geneva), is celebrated as the earliest known European painting to portray a recognizable landscape — the Lake of Geneva with the Alps in the background. Other notable works include panels from the St. Peter Altarpiece and The Annunciation. Witz’s fusion of spiritual themes with naturalism helped lay the foundation for later developments in both Northern and Italian Renaissance painting.
