Mabuse
Jan Gossaert (c. 1478–1532), commonly known as Mabuse after his birthplace Maubeuge, was a pioneering master of the Flemish Renaissance. Among the first artists to bring the influence of the Italian Renaissance to Northern Europe, Gossaert fused Flemish detail and naturalism with classical themes and monumental forms inspired by Rome.
His most celebrated works include Neptune and Amphitrite (Berlin), Adam and Eve (Vienna), and the Adoration of the Kings (London, National Gallery). Gossaert was also an accomplished portraitist, painting noble patrons such as Charles V’s courtiers with striking realism and elegance. His introduction of Italianate motifs into Flemish art helped shape the course of Northern Renaissance painting.
