Martin Schongauer
Martin Schongauer (c. 1448–1491) was a German master of the Early Renaissance, celebrated as both a painter and one of the greatest engravers of the 15th century. Active in Colmar, Schongauer combined Northern Gothic elegance with the emerging naturalism of the Renaissance, influencing artists across Europe, including Albrecht Dürer.
His most famous painting is the Madonna in the Rose Garden (Colmar, Unterlinden Museum), admired for its delicate detail and serene beauty. As an engraver, his works such as The Temptation of St. Anthony and numerous biblical prints circulated widely, spreading Renaissance ideals throughout Europe. His art is distinguished by its refined linework, balanced compositions, and devotional sensitivity.
