Nuno Gonçalves
Nuno Gonçalves (active c. 1450–1471) is regarded as one of the greatest painters of the Portuguese Renaissance. He served as the royal court painter to King Afonso V and is most famously credited with the Saint Vincent Panels, a monumental polyptych that remains one of Portugal’s national treasures. These works showcase his mastery of portraiture, expressive realism, and the ability to capture the faces of nobility, clergy, knights, and commoners with extraordinary individuality.
The Saint Vincent Panels (housed in Lisbon’s Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga) are celebrated for their vivid storytelling, psychological depth, and detailed representation of 15th-century Portuguese society. Through them, Nuno Gonçalves elevated Portuguese painting to new artistic heights, placing it alongside the achievements of contemporary masters in Italy and Flanders.
